Start with the project and the balance.

Identify the project, your business’s role, who contracted with you, the work at issue, and the amount you believe remains unpaid.

Keep a record of the agreement.

Keep the contract, invoices, payment records, change orders, and relevant communications available. Distinguish the original scope from later changes and note any explanation for withheld payment. Wait for instructions on sharing materials securely.

Discuss the facts and options.

An unpaid balance does not by itself establish that a particular remedy is available. Requirements and timing depend on the project and circumstances. Ask about scope, likely stages, fees and expenses, and what information would help the firm evaluate the matter.
